Our "Aythaya Red" is a cuvée from SHIRAZ (Syrah) and CABERNET SAUVIGNON
grapes. Both vines were imported in 1999 from France. From next yea
(2007) onwards there will DORNFELDER from Germany and TEMPRANILLO from
Spain as well
A fruity red MOSCATO grape from Italy is the main grape variety of our
famous "Aythaya Rosé".
The noble Sauvignon Blanc from the Bordeaux area is the dominating grape
variety of our "Aythaya White", the other white variety of the cuvée
being Chenin Blanc grape from the Loire valley in France. Tests are
under way to evaluate the tropical suitability of some special clones,
e.g. of Pinot Noir, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay and Barbera.
As of the 2005 harvest,
the company has started making a 42 proof Grappa from the various grapes
processed, for example the famous AYTHAYA Moscato Grappa. In honour of
the Italian inventors of this kind of refined distilled product, our
produce is called GRAPPINO. A grappa is an 'After dinner Digestive' in
the good Italian tradition that is complementary to a strong Espresso,
and often drunk together. A HOLSTEIN 3-step distillation unit was built
at the Bodensee in Germany and shipped to the Shan States..
We will present all of our new wines (2006 vintage) in October 2006. in
Yangon, Bagan and for tasting of course, all the time thereafter at our
vineyard in Aythaya, and at our office in Yangon.
Image The vines from which
Aythaya wines are made, grow on the Western slopes of the City of
Taunggyi which is the capital of the Shan States. The vineyard was
established in 1999 in the close vicinity of Taunggyi, in the village of
Aythaya which is located at an altitude of nearly 1.300 m. From the
vineyard it is only 25 km to the famous Inle Lake . All fields and soils
in the region are of calcareous origin which is part of the terroire of
Aythaya wines. Geologically, the hilly slopes of the Shan States are the
Southern extension of the Himalayan Mountains. Here the right soil
parameters were found, a moderate climate in higher altitudes and no
excessive rainfalls
From the outset, the
policy of the company was to grow only noble grape varieties in order to
produce quality wines for export. We, therefore, had to find the best
experts with the most credible experience of “Viticulture in a tropical
environment”. . We retained the services of two prominent wine
professionals from Europe who consult the major wineries in SE Asia :
Mr. W.Schaefer and Mr. P.Hoehnen from Germany. |
